Data Mining and Information Systems Lab

Data science has advanced to the point where it is changing our world. It is now the center of exploring and uncovering knowledge in different domains and acts as a bridge to connect them. With ever growing amount of data and opportunity to explore, DMIS lab aims to drive the data science revolution.

DMIS (Data Mining and Information Systems) Lab seeks to develop explainable AI in the following areas: Drug Discovery, Bioinformatics Analysis, Biomedical Image Processing, Recommender Systems, Question and Answering, Search, Financial Data Analysis, and much more. We focus on finding models, algorithms, and systems for any kinds of data analysis with applications on prediction, knowledge discovery, representation learning and anomaly detection. DMIS Lab is also participating various data science competitions such as DREAM Challenges to solve difficult real-world problems and facilitate knowledge sharing with other research teams around the world.

 

Neural Computation Laboratory

The Neural Computation Laboratory, aiming to understand the structure and functions of neural nerves and identify the mechanism of information processing and memory storage in the neural network, utilizes electrical-physiological, optogenetics, and behavioral experiment methods as well as mathematical modeling methods to simulate the nervous system based on neurobiological experiment data. In particular, the laboratory actively carries out research on these specific subjects: the roles of neural system structures in brain information processing; the characteristics of information processing by patients with Alzheimer’s disease and therapeutic techniques; and the development of artificial intelligence and information processing system through neuromorphic modeling based on the principles of brain information processing. The laboratory ultimately aims to understand Neural Code - the neural system language hidden in signals from neural nerves - and to study the mechanism of information processing and memory storage in the neural network.

Brain Lab.

Medical artificial intelligence, which applies the state-of-the-art AI technology for medical data analysis to comprehensively understand the conditions of patients, suggests the optimal therapeutic methods tailored for each patient, and supports medical staff with their diagnosis, is a promising next-generation technology. Medical AI has drawn the most attention among various areas where the AI technology can be applied. Beyond diagnostics, medical AI has been extended to all medical services, including robotic surgery and intelligent health care.

Brain Lab has been working on the development of various technologies with an aim to develop a clinical decision support system (CDSS) that is equipped with decision-making abilities better than those of humans, thereby being ready for clinical use. To realize the system, AI is required to be applied to many areas, including analysis of multi-modal physiological signals, quantitative analysis of medical imaging, and analysis of atypical electronic health records. Along with the CDSS development, the lab conducts research on various AI applications such as brain-computer interfaces, cranial nerve disease simulations, debtor contact systems, and virtual fitting solutions.

 

 

Universal Transfer Learning Lab

Our lab is committed to the investigation of effective transfer learning algorithms that span diverse domains and applications. It places a specific emphasis on elevating the transferability, generalization, and adaptation capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) models. It delves into multiple AI domains, including computer vision, multi-modal (language-vision), and natural language processing. Ultimately, the aim is to lead in the creation of specialized transfer learning algorithms that seamlessly transcend the boundaries between various domains and modalities, exploring a wide array of tasks and tailoring them for practical AI applications. Recently, the laboratory has been directing its efforts towards the development of transfer learning techniques utilizing foundational models to realize these objectives.

    • Affective cognition lab at Korea University pursues research in the area of emotion and emotion regulation. We combine behavioral and neuroscientific techniques (fMRI, rTMS/tCS, EEG/ERP) to understand the complex nature of emotional processes and the reciprocal interaction between emotion and cognition. Our recent research focuses on the development of cognitive strategies that successfully modulate maladaptive emotional responses, with emphasis on the distinction between explicit and implicit strategies and the role of brain stimulation as a potentiator. Our research is expanded into the domain of emotional intelligence, healthy emotional coping, treatment of emotional disorders, and emotional change with aging.

The Korea University Computer Vision Laboratory (CVLAB), which aims to heighten human values via the development of AI, carries out a wide range of research on computer vision and machine intelligence, two key areas in artificial intelligence. Specific research subjects include 3D computer vision, visual correspondence, visual understanding, multi-modal learning, deep representation learning, image generation, and image restoration, in order to develop the AI technology which perceives the visual world and makes a decision at the level of human and ultimately collaborates with humans. In addition, CVLAB has been actively involved in convergence research within the areas of graphics, robotics, natural language processing, voice processing, brain science, and cognitive science.

The Computer Graphics Lab at Korea University has been pouring energy into CG/HCI/VR research. Some of the on-going research at the lab are related to physics-based visual simulation for VFX effects, artificial life created by computer graphics and artificial intelligence, and application of big data-based computer graphics.

 

Based on the lab’s global research achievements, eleven of its graduates are currently working as professors at universities. The other graduates from the lab are also working hard to realize their dreams at government-run research institutes such as ETRI and KIST; in large conglomerates like Samsung Electronics; and as self-employed CEOs. The lab is proud to offer full-tuition scholarships to its students so that they can concentrate on their study. Those who participate in lab-led projects are also eligible for financial support for living expenses.

We are tackling fundamental open problems in machine learning and computer vision research to achieve deep understanding of visual world. Intelligence and Informatics Lab (INI) is under the supervision of Professor Kim Hyeon-cheol from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the College of Informatics, Korea University. Based on the machine learning algorithms, INI has been carrying out a research on the development of analysis or forecast models for various domains. The lab particularly focuses on the interpretable machine learning study in which a neural network model can infer from learning, interpret models, and ultimately, make it understandable for humans.

The areas of research conducted by Wireless Data Communications Laboratory are 5G communication/network, autonomous driving, IoT, and mobile computing. First, the laboratory studies the 5G technology, considered as standard for the next-generation mobile communication, and develops its applications. With regards to the 5G technology applications, the laboratory carries out research on V2X (vehicle-to-everything) communication, a key technology for autonomous vehicles, focusing on the development of artificial intelligence capable of autonomous driving. In the IoT area, the laboratory tries to find a new application from coupling communication with sensing. In the area of mobile computing, the lab aims to develop an innovative service based on smartphones. 

 
 

Min Lab

We have investigated human intentional mental properties (e.g. top-down cognitive processing). We have tried to find its neurophysiological correlates(EEG, MEG, fMRI), which can be consequently employed as potent brain signals to cognitively control the brain-machine interface (BMI). We have also investigated how to modulate neural and cognitive activities in a noninvasive manner(tCS or Ultrasound), leading to changes in cognitive and behavioural responses. Recently, we focus on the study of Consciousness.

ESCA is dedicated to research on hardware-based security and acceleration utilizing CPUs as well as FPGA. The lab has studied how to accelerate big data processing and improve security based on hardware such as FPGA. The lab’s current research project is related to the application of AI accelerator, designed by the lab, to Social Overhead Capital (SOC). It also works with different testbeds to identify CPU security flaws such as Spectre and Meltdown and learn to cope with them.

Key research themes are intelligent clouds and network virtualization system. We are working on spoken language based human and machine interface technologies to provide convenient access to computers. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning are our main research interests. We are developing state-of-the-art applications for speech understanding, speech recognition, speech synthesis, speaker recognition, and voice conversion using deep learning. One of our research results is a “large vocabulary speaker independent continuous speech recognizer” that shows robustness under noisy environments. It uses an “unsupervised online adaptation algorithm” that improves the performance of the speech recognition system as it is used in real environments. This will make it possible to efficiently use the speech recognizer for many real life applications.

Brain Signal Processing Lab. (BSPL)

Our goal is to investigate brain functions measured via various neuroimaging modalities including MRI (MRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) employing various signal processing techniques, machine learning, and deep learning approaches. We have done some interesting works including the fMRI data analyses using novel analytical methods such as independent vector analysis (IVA), iterative dual-regression of group independent component analysis (ICA) with a sparse prior to better estimate true neuronal activity, recursive principal component analysis (PCA) to EEG-segments of simultaneous EEG-fMRI data, and deep neural network (DNN) to fMRI data. The developed methods would gainfully be applied to the neuroimaging data including fMRI, simultaneous EEG-fMRI, and real-time fMRI based neurofeedback method. Based on the correct understanding of human brain functions, we would like to focus on the basic neuroscientific researches as well as brain engineering applications including the BCI/BMI and ultimately on preclinical applications to develop an option to diagnose and treat the various neuropsychiatric illnesses such as depression, schizophrenia, and substance abuse. We believe that the proper analytical methods to exploit the hidden information of the neuroimaging data would lead to a better understanding of the human brain and to better engineer the brain and ultimately toward the enhancement of quality of life.

CCSLAB was founded in 2004 with the purpose of finding countermeasures against security issues. Its members are working on a wide range of security-related research from traditional issues, such as software and network security, to recent technology issues like IoT and blockchain. To be specific, their research aims to develop security protection technologies to automatically detect and analyze security vulnerabilities and to analyze open-source software in use and detect any license violations. The lab also conducts research on network protocol purging and detecting DDoS to respond to sinkholes. The lab actively collaborates with great scholars and researchers in security. The research outcomes and project achievements are regularly published in major international journals and at conferences like IEEE S&P. NLP & AI Lab performs research on natural language processing based on statistics and deep learning, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The lab proudly possesses elemental technologies and analysis technologies encompassing the entire process of natural language processing from morpheme analyzers to dialogue systems. With numerous papers published annually in prestigious journals at home and abroad and presented at international academic conferences, the lab has settled its position as the Korea’s top research lab in natural language processing. High-performance Visual Computing Lab (HVCL) at Korea University is conducting interdisciplinary research on visual computing and visualization for novel scientific discoveries. In the cognitive Systems Lab, we have two main goals: -our first goal is to enhance our understanding of the algorithms employed by the human cognitive system through the use of cutting-edge methods from machine learning and computer graphics coupled with perceptual and cognitive experiments. -our second goal is to transfer this knowledge to implementations of intelligent, artificial cognitive systems which can be used in robotics, computer vision, computer animation, and even in clinical applications.
