Data Mining and Information Systems Lab

Data science has advanced to the point where it is changing our world. It is now the center of exploring and uncovering knowledge in different domains and acts as a bridge to connect them. With ever growing amount of data and opportunity to explore, DMIS lab aims to drive the data science revolution.
DMIS (Data Mining and Information Systems) Lab seeks to develop explainable AI in the following areas: Drug Discovery, Bioinformatics Analysis, Biomedical Image Processing, Recommender Systems, Question and Answering, Search, Financial Data Analysis, and much more. We focus on finding models, algorithms, and systems for any kinds of data analysis with applications on prediction, knowledge discovery, representation learning and anomaly detection. DMIS Lab is also participating various data science competitions such as DREAM Challenges to solve difficult real-world problems and facilitate knowledge sharing with other research teams around the world.

Computer Vision Lab. (CVLAB)

The Korea University Computer Vision Laboratory (CVLAB), which aims to heighten human values via the development of AI, carries out a wide range of research on computer vision and machine intelligence, two key areas in artificial intelligence. Specific research subjects include 3D computer vision, visual correspondence, visual understanding, multi-modal learning, deep representation learning, image generation, and image restoration, in order to develop the AI technology which perceives the visual world and makes a decision at the level of human and ultimately collaborates with humans. In addition, CVLAB has been actively involved in convergence research within the areas of graphics, robotics, natural language processing, voice processing, brain science, and cognitive science.
Digital eXPerience Laboratory (DXP)

Digital eXPerience Laboratory (DXP) carries out research on mobile interaction, mixed/virtual reality technology, and the development of human-centered HCI for next generation. In particular, DXP focuses on methodology and basic technology for enhancing simple and functional interfaces to Rich-Experiential interactions.
MLV Lab

We are tackling fundamental open problems in machine learning and computer vision research to achieve deep understanding of visual world. High-level visual perception involves automated image and video analysis, computational geometry, and visual reasoning. Our curiosity on highly structured knowledge, images and videos lead us to study the underlying non-Euclidean space and generalize models, including deep neural networks, to manifolds, and graphs.

Intelligence and Informatics Lab (INI) is under the supervision of Professor Kim Hyeon-cheol from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the College of Informatics, Korea University. Based on the machine learning algorithms, INI has been carrying out a research on the development of analysis or forecast models for various domains. The lab particularly focuses on the interpretable machine learning study in which a neural network model can infer from learning, interpret models, and ultimately, make it understandable for humans.
Wireless Data Communications Laboratory

The areas of research conducted by Wireless Data Communications Laboratory are 5G communication/network, autonomous driving, IoT, and mobile computing. First, the laboratory studies the 5G technology, considered as standard for the next-generation mobile communication, and develops its applications. With regards to the 5G technology applications, the laboratory carries out research on V2X (vehicle-to-everything) communication, a key technology for autonomous vehicles, focusing on the development of artificial intelligence capable of autonomous driving. In the IoT area, the laboratory tries to find a new application from coupling communication with sensing. In the area of mobile computing, the lab aims to develop an innovative service based on smartphones.

High-speed Communication Laboratory performs a wide range of research in communication networks such as basic networks (IEEE Std 802.11/802.15.4, Routing, QoS, Mobility, Internet Security, Management), Wireless & Mobile Networks (IoT, VANET, 5G, TSN), and future networks (SDN, ICN, LISP, NFV). Recently, the laboratory steers its attention toward research that applies machine learning to communication networks.

Embedded Systems and Computer Architecture Labs (ESCA)

ESCA is dedicated to research on hardware-based security and acceleration utilizing CPUs as well as FPGA. The lab has studied how to accelerate big data processing and improve security based on hardware such as FPGA. The lab’s current research project is related to the application of AI accelerator, designed by the lab, to Social Overhead Capital (SOC). It also works with different testbeds to identify CPU security flaws such as Spectre and Meltdown and learn to cope with them.
Software Analysis Laboratory

The Software Analysis Laboratory performs research on technologies to develop software that is safe and can be trusted by users. Based on its understanding of programming languages, the laboratory studies about how to develop various technologies for automatic software analysis, automatic software patch, and automatic software synthesis. Academically, the lab publishes its research results in top-class software journals and at academic conferences. In collaboration with companies at home and abroad, the lab contributes to addressing practical issues in the real world.

Operating Systems Lab

Operating Systems Lab has been selected as one of the national "SW StarLabs" that are designated and supported by Korea Government for its excellence in software research. Key research themes are intelligent clouds and network virtualization system. Intelligent clouds include followings: 1) intelligent processing of deep learning, 2) performance guarantees for scalable big data processing, and 3) blockchain-based security. Network virtualization system builds virtualized SDN technology that provides ultra-low latency, isolation of traffics, and programmability to tenants, that are in critically needed of 5G/6G services and beyond.
Artificial intelligence Lab

We are working on spoken language based human and machine interface technologies to provide convenient access to computers. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning are our main research interests. We are developing state-of-the-art applications for speech understanding, speech recognition, speech synthesis, speaker recognition, and voice conversion using deep learning. One of our research results is a “large vocabulary speaker independent continuous speech recognizer” that shows robustness under noisy environments. It uses an “unsupervised online adaptation algorithm” that improves the performance of the speech recognition system as it is used in real environments. This will make it possible to efficiently use the speech recognizer for many real life applications.

CCSLAB was founded in 2004 with the purpose of finding countermeasures against security issues. Its members are working on a wide range of security-related research from traditional issues, such as software and network security, to recent technology issues like IoT and blockchain. To be specific, their research aims to develop security protection technologies to automatically detect and analyze security vulnerabilities and to analyze open-source software in use and detect any license violations. The lab also conducts research on network protocol purging and detecting DDoS to respond to sinkholes. The lab actively collaborates with great scholars and researchers in security. The research outcomes and project achievements are regularly published in major international journals and at conferences like IEEE S&P. The published research results are to be actually utilized in our daily life.

Natural Language Processing & Artificial Intelligence Lab (NLP&AI Lab)

NLP & AI Lab performs research on natural language processing based on statistics and deep learning, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The lab proudly possesses elemental technologies and analysis technologies encompassing the entire process of natural language processing from morpheme analyzers to dialogue systems. With numerous papers published annually in prestigious journals at home and abroad and presented at international academic conferences, the lab has settled its position as the Korea’s top research lab in natural language processing. Recently, the lab established the Human-inspired AI & Computing Research Center under the sponsorship of a government-run ICT research center, where the lab intends to carry out research on the AI technology reflecting the principles of information processing by humans.
SMRL (SoC and Microprocessor Research Lab.)

SMRL studies on how to control the power and heating of computers by hardware as well as software. Currently, the lab focuses on research on cloud environments and 3D die-stacking technology. The Intelligence Engineering Lab studies how to build intelligence based on data analysis with its major research areas as below:
- Multi-dimensional data mining and knowledge discovery: The lab studies Big Data analysis platforms utilizing dispersion computing technology in order to efficiently analyze Big Data. Based on the platform, the lab is developing data mining algorithms to discover new types of knowledge.
- Deep learning-based text mining: The lab carries out research on text mining based on deep learning and works on how to practically apply the text mining technology to reality. The lab’s major achievements are as follows; the development of methods (https://withcat.net/#medi)to plot graphs from the relations of major concepts (e.g. proteins and names of diseases) found in medical journals, and the development of an application (https://withcat.net/#deep) to help job seekers write the letters of self-introduction based on recurrent neural network (RNN) technology.

High-performance Visual Computing Lab (HVCL) at Korea University is conducting interdisciplinary research on visual computing and visualization for novel scientific discoveries. We are also developing GPU and distributed computing systems for user-friendly and efficient large-scale data visual analysis.
